Shocked Clouds in the Vela Supernova Remnant
Unusually strong high-excitation C I has been detected in 11 lines ofsight through the Vela supernova remnant (SNR) by means of UV absorptionline studies of IUE data. Most of these lines of sight lie near thewestern edge of the bright X-ray region of the SNR in a spatiallydistinct band approximately 1° by 4° oriented approximatelynorth-south. The high-excitation C I (denoted C I* and C I**) isinterpreted as evidence of a complex of shocked dense clouds interactingwith the SNR, because of the high pressures indicated in this region. Tofurther analyze the properties of this region of enhanced C I* and CI**, we present new HIRES-processed IRAS data of the entire Vela SNR. Atemperature map calculated from the HIRES IRAS data, based on atwo-component dust model, reveals the signature of hot dust at severallocations in the SNR. The hot dust is anticorrelated spatially withX-ray emission, as would be expected for a dusty medium interacting witha shock wave. The regions of hot dust are strongly correlated withoptical filaments, supporting a scenario of dense clouds interior to theSNR that have been shocked and are now cooling behind the supernovablast wave. With few exceptions, the lines of sight to the stronghigh-excitation C I pass through regions of hot dust and opticalfilaments. Possible mechanisms for the production of the unexpectedlylarge columns of high-excitation C I are discussed. Dense clouds on theback western hemisphere of the remnant may explain the relatively lowX-ray emission in the western portion of the Vela SNR due to the slowerforward shock velocity in regions where the shock has encountered thedense clouds. An alternate explanation for the presence of ground-stateand excited-state neutrals, as well as ionized species, along the sameline of sight is a magnetic precursor that heats and compresses the gasahead of the shock.

Binary systems with post-T Tauri secondaries
The identification of post-T Tauri (pTT) stars selected throughspectroscopic criteria by Pallavicini et al. (\cite{Pallavicini92}) andby Martín et al. (1992) among the candidates belonging to visualbinary systems is revisited in the present paper by studying theirposition in the HR diagram. These stars belong to the so-called Lindroosbinary sample (Lindroos \cite{Lindroos85}), i.e. to systems withearly-type primaries and late-type companions. If these binaries arephysical and not simply optical pairs, similar ages must be found forthe early-type primary and the late-type component of each system. Theages of these systems have been derived by Lindroos in 1986, by usingcalibrations of the uvbyβ indices. In this paper, we revisit theseages through the position of these stars among new evolutionary tracksin the HR diagram for pre- and post-main sequence stars. We derive newestimations of the ages of each system component, as well as theirmasses, using parallaxes of the early-type component derived fromHipparcos data and by forcing the late-type companion to be at the samedistance. Teff and log g of the early-type components havebeen computed using the calibrations of two independent photometricsystems: the uvbyβ photometry and the Geneva system. TheTeff of the late-type stars have been determined by usingvarious calibrations of several photometric systems: uvbyβ, UBV andVRI, in order to determine the uncertainties and systematic errors onthese parameters and consequently on the ages. Differences in the agesand masses obtained by using various sources of recent evolutionarymodels are considered and discussed. The consistency of the age of thelate type component with that of its early type primary is examined; thevalidity of this criterion for a selection of physical pairs isdiscussed. The accuracy of the observational and theoretical data arenot sufficient to assign stringent values to the age for several of theexamined systems. Nevertheless, in spite of the large error bars, wehave established that we could select a number of systems which, according to their position in the HR diagram, may be physicallyassociated. The selection of possible physically bounded systemsobtained with the present approach and that made by Pallavicini et al.(\cite{Pallavicini92}) or Martín et al. (1992) on the basis ofspectroscopic criteria are not always coincident. Spectroscopiccriteria, for example the presence of a strong Li feature, are morestringent conditions than that of coherent ages of primaries andsecondaries; however the Li I 6708 doublet is expected to fade in thelatest stages of the pre-main sequence life of a star, so that the``oldest" pTTs may not be detected by spectroscopy only. The differentresults so obtained are discussed for each system and we conclude thatthe present approach may be used as a powerful criterion to select newpTT candidates in visual binaries to be observed and analyzed with highresolution spectrographs and to select candidates that have almostreached the main sequence. Partly based on data from the ESA Hipparcosastrometric satellite. Spectroscopy and Time Variability of Absorption Lines in the Direction of the Vela Supernova Remnant
We present high-resolution (R~75,000), high signal-to-noise (S/N~100) CaII λ3933.663 and Na I λλ5889.951, 5895.924 spectraof 68 stars in the direction of the Vela supernova remnant. The spectracomprise the most complete high-resolution, high S/N optical survey ofearly-type stars in this region of the sky. A subset of the sight lineshas been observed at multiple epochs, 1993/1994 and 1996. Of the 13stars observed twice, seven have spectra revealing changes in theequivalent width and/or velocity structure of lines, most of which arisefrom remnant gas. Such time variability has been reported previously forthe sight lines toward HD 72089 and HD 72997 by Danks & Sembach andfor HD 72127 by Hobbs and coworkers. We have confirmed the ongoing timevariability of these spectra and present new evidence of variability inthe spectra of HD 73658, HD 74455, HD 75309, and HD 75821. We havetabulated Na I and Ca II absorption-line information for the sight linesin our sample to serve as a benchmark for further investigations of thedynamics and evolution of the Vela SNR. Based on observations obtainedat the European Southern Observatory, La Silla, Chile.

The Distance to the VELA Supernova Remnant
We have obtained high-resolution Ca II and Na I absorption-line spectratoward 68 OB stars in the direction of the Vela supernova remnant. Thestars lie at distances of 190-2800 pc as determined by Hipparcos andspectroscopic parallax estimations. The presence of high-velocityabsorption attributable to the remnant along some of the sight linesconstrains the remnant distance to 250+/-30 pc. This distance isconsistent with several recent investigations that suggest that thecanonical remnant distance of 500 pc is too large.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

A decade of photometric observations of young stars - With special comments on periodicities
Photometric observations of 16 young stellar objects during 10 observingperiods form 1981 to 1991 are reported. The photometry includesmeasurements with broadband Stromgren uvby and standard UBVRIJHKLintermediate filters in addition to narrow-band H-alpha and H-betafilters. The material includes eight classical T Tauri stars (CTTS),five weak-line T Tauri stars (WTTS), two post-T Tauri candidates (PTTS),and one Herbig Ae star. Periodic light variations in 15 of the starswere searched for. None of the CTTS shows distinct periods. It isconcluded that many announced periods are still doubtful, but one-fourthof the CTTS studied so far have well defined periods. All five WTTS showevidence of regular fluctuations of small amplitudes on time-scales of afew days. For the Herbig Ae star Ab Aur, no period can be announced atpresent.

A study of visual double stars with early-type primaries. V - Post-T Tauri secondaries
In an ongoing study of companions of O and B type primaries, themajority of the secondaries are found to be of spectral type F, G, or K.Their properties are investigated in relation to their evolutionarystatus. The ages of the systems have been determined from uvby-betaphotometry of the primaries and it is found that all are younger than150 million years and half are less than 30 million years old.Thirty-seven secondaries have ages less than the expected contractiontime to the zero-age-main sequence (ZAMS). More than 50 percent of theF, G, and K secondaries exhibit spectroscopic features (Ca II H, K andH-alpha emission and strong Li absorption) typical of young stars andreminiscent of T Tauri stars although not as conspicuous. It isappropriate to classify them as post-T Tauri stars. The lifetime of somefeatures characteristic of early stellar evolution is discussed.

A catalog of ultraviolet interstellar extinction excesses for 1415 stars
Ultraviolet interstellar extinction excesses are presented for 1415stars with spectral types B7 and earlier. The excesses with respect to Vare derived from Astronomical Netherlands Satellite (ANS) 5-channel UVphotometry at central wavelengths of approximately 1550, 1800, 2500, and3300 A. A measure of the excess extinction in the 2200-A extinction bumpis also given. The data are valuable for investigating the systematicsof peculiar interstellar extinction and for studying the character of UVinterstellar extinction in the general direction of stars for which theextinction-curve shape is unknown.

A study of visual double stars with early type primaries. IV Astrophysical data
Astrophysical parameters (MK class, color excess, absolute magnitude, distance, effective temperature, mass, and age) are derived fromcalibrations of the uvby-beta indices for the members of 253 doublestars with O or B type primaries and faint secondaries. The photometricspectral classification is compared to the MK classes, and the agreementis very good. The derived data together with spectroscopic and JHKL dataare used for deciding which pairs are likely to be physical and whichare optical, and it is shown that 98 (34 percent) of the secondaries arelikely to be members of physical systems. For 90 percent of the physicalpairs the projected separation between the components is less than25,000 AU. A majority of the physical secondaries are late-type stars, and 50 percent of them are contracting towards the zero-agemain-sequence. Also presented are new uvby-beta data for 43 secondariesand a computer program for determining astrophysical parameters fromuvby-beta data.

High-resolution IUE observations of interstellar absorption lines in the VELA supernova remnant
Ultraviolet spectra of 45 stars in the vicinity of the Vela supernovaremnant were recorded by the short-wavelength echelle spectrographaboard the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). Over one-third ofthe stars show interstellar absorption lines at large radial velocities(greater than 60 km/s). The mapping of these high-velocity components inthe sky suggests the motions are chaotic, rather than from a coherentexpansion of the remnant material. In accord with earlier conclusionsfrom Copernicus data, the gas at high velocity exhibits higher thannormal ionization and shows substantially less depletion of nonvolatileelements than normal interstellar material at low velocities. Relativelystrong lines from neutral carbon in the two excited fine-structurestates indicate that the neutral clouds within the remnant have hadtheir pressures enhanced by the passage of the blast wave from thesupernova. Also, the remnant seems to show a significant enhancement inthe abundances of low-velocity Si IV, C IV, and N V over those found inthe general interstellar medium.

A study of visual double stars with early type primaries. I - Spectroscopic results
Attention is given to spectral peculiarities found in data on thespectral classes of 486 stars in 254 visual doublet or multiplet systemswith O or B type primaries, in order to isolate a group of very youngstars that may serve for the study of early stellar evolutioncharacteristics. It is noted that the material contains a substantialfraction of secondaries that are likely to be physical, and that severalof these may be in the premain-sequence phase of stellar evolution, orhave reached the zero-age main sequence.

H-beta photometry of southern early-type stars
H-beta photoelectric photometry is presented for 209 southern hemisphereearly-type stars from the HD catalog with galactic latitudes /b/ greaterthan 6 deg. Four-color photometry exists for all these stars and MKtypes for most of them. Absolute magnitudes have been estimated for allbut the emission-line stars and distances from the sun and the galacticplane determined.

Interstellar gas in the GUM Nebula
A survey of the interstellar gas near the Gum Nebula by opticalobservation of 67 stars at Ca II, 42 stars at Na I, and 14 stars in theUV with the Copernicus satellite provided radial velocities and columndensities for all resolved absorption components. Velocity dispersionsfor gas in the Gum Nebula are not significantly larger than in thegeneral interstellar medium; the ionization structure is predominantlythat of an H II region with moderately high ionization. Denser, morehighly ionized clouds are concentrated toward the Gum Nebula; theseclouds do not show the anomalously high ionization observed in the Velaremnant clouds.

Spectral classification from the ultraviolet line features of S2/68 spectra. V - Supplement series
The paper presents the ultraviolet classification of more than 450 B-Aand F spectra obtained with the sky survey telescope mounted on the TD1satellite. Concerning abnormal objects, attention is given to the Bestars, the binary stars, the helium weak stars, and the lambda Booobjects. With regard to Be stars, it is concluded that the 1930 Awavelength feature is linked to the existence of either shell structuresor Fe II emission lines in the visual spectral range. In addition, it issuggested that stellar spectra at wavelengths of 1410, 1610-20 and 2400A are equivalent to the He-weak group in the classical range.

Ultraviolet absorption lines associated with the VELA supernova remnant
Two stars behind the Vela supernova remnant and two stars offset fromthe remnant have been observed with the UV spectrometer aboard theCopernicus satellite. Over 200 interstellar atomic and molecularabsorption features between 1000 and 1400 A have been identified andmeasured for radial velocity and equivalent width. In many cases, additional information was obtained by studying the detailed shapes ofthe recorded profiles. Most of the stars show several absorptioncomponents, with clouds of the highest radial velocity appearing in thespectra of stars behind the remnant. For each component, columndensities were derived using velocity dispersion parameters whichyielded the most self-consistent results. Qualitatively, the gas towardthe remnant exhibits a number of unusual properties, when compared withnormal interstellar material. First, abnormally high radial velocitieswere evident. Second, the degree of ionization of some elementssuggested the existence of ionizing processes significantly more potentthan those found in general regions of space. Finally, an investigationof electron densities shows that much of the gas, especially that athigh velocity, must exist in the form of relatively thin sheets orfilaments. If cosmic abundances prevail, the column densities ofhigh-velocity excited material suggest that H-alpha emission measurescould be as large as 100 sq cm/cu pc.
