Abundance difference between components of wide binaries. II. The southern sample Aims.We present high-precision iron abundance differences for 33 widebinaries with similar components. They were observed with the FEROSspectrograph at ESO, looking for abundance anomalies due to theingestion of metal rich material of a planetary origin. Methods:.An optimized data analysis technique and the high quality of thespectra allowed us to achieve an error of about 0.02 dex for pairs withsmall temperaure differences. Results: . We found one case (HIP64030 = HD 113984) with a large (0.27 dex) abundance difference. Theprimary of this binary appears to be a blue straggler, and the abundancedifference might be due to the peculiar evolution of the star. A fewother pairs show small abundance differences (≤0.09 dex). In a fewcases these differences suggest the ingestion of a small amount of metalrich material, but in others they are likely spurious, because of thelarge temperature difference, high level of magnetic activity, ordifferent evolutionary phases between the components. Some cases ofabundance differences involving pairs with warm (Teff ≥6000 K) primaries might be due to the diffusion of heavy elements;dedicated theoretical models for the stellar parameters of the targetswould be welcome. Conclusions: . This study confirms ourpreliminary result based on analysis of 23 pairs (Desidera et al. 2004)that the occurrence of large alterations in stellar abundances caused bythe ingestion of metal rich, rocky material is not a common event. Forat least 65% of the pairs with components warmer than 5500 K, the limitson the amount of rocky material accreted by the program stars arecomparable to the estimates of rocky material accreted by the Sun duringits main-sequence lifetime.

Spectroscopic characterization of a sample of southern visual binaries Aims.We present the spectroscopic characterization of 56 pairs of visualbinaries with similar components, based on high resolution spectraacquired with FEROS at ESO La Silla. Methods: .For all stars, wemeasured radial and rotational velocities and CaII H&K emission. Results: .Five previously unknown double lined spectroscopic binarieswere found. Six other pairs show velocity differences that are notcompatible with the orbital motion of the wide pair, indicating thepresence of further companion(s) in the system. The fraction of visualbinaries that contain additional spectroscopic components is27±10%, compatible with other literature estimates. The ages ofthe components of the pairs derived from chromospheric activitytypically show apparent differences of about 0.2 dex. A few pairs show arather large difference in activity level, but in most cases this isconsistent with the variability of chromospheric emission observed forthe Sun along its magnetic cycle.

Abundance difference between components of wide binaries We present iron abundance analysis for 23 wide binaries with mainsequence components in the temperture range 4900-6300 K, taken from thesample of the pairs currently included in the radial velocity planetsearch on going at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) using the highresolution spectrograph SARG. The use of a line-by-line differentialanalysis technique between the components of each pair allows us toreach errors of about 0.02 dex in the iron content difference. Most ofthe pairs have abundance differences lower than 0.02 dex and there areno pairs with differences larger than 0.07 dex. The four cases ofdifferences larger than 0.02 dex may be spurious because of the largererror bars affecting pairs with large temperature difference, cold starsand rotating stars. The pair HD 219542, previously reported by us tohave a different composition, here is shown to be normal. Fornon-rotating stars warmer than 5500 K, characterized by a thinnerconvective envelope and for which our analyis appears to be of higheraccuracy, we are able to exclude in most cases the consumption of morethan 1 Earth Mass of iron (about 5 Earth masses of meteoritic material)during the main sequence lifetime of the stars, placing more stringentlimits (about 0.4 Earth masses of iron) in five cases of warm stars. This latter limit is similar to the estimates of rocky material accretedby the Sun during its main sequence lifetime. Combining the results ofthe present analysis with those for the Hyades and Pleiades, we concludethat the hypothesis that pollution by planetary material is the onlymechanism responsible for the highest metallicity of the stars withplanets may be rejected at more than 99% level of confidence if theincidence of planets in these samples is as high as 8% and similar tothe field stars included in current radial velocity surveys. However, the significance of this result drops considerably if the incidence ofplanets around stars in binary systems and clusters is less than a halfof that around normal field stars.Based on observations made with the Italian Telescopio Nazionale Galileo(TNG) operated on the island of La Palma by the Centro Galileo Galileiof the INAF (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica) at the SpanishObservatorio del Roque de los Muchachos of the Instituto de Astrofisicade Canarias. The equivalent widths are only available in electronic form at the CDSvia anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/420/683

Contributions to the Nearby Stars (NStars) Project: Spectroscopy of Stars Earlier than M0 within 40 Parsecs: The Northern Sample. I. We have embarked on a project, under the aegis of the Nearby Stars(NStars)/Space Interferometry Mission Preparatory Science Program, toobtain spectra, spectral types, and, where feasible, basic physicalparameters for the 3600 dwarf and giant stars earlier than M0 within 40pc of the Sun. In this paper, we report on the results of this projectfor the first 664 stars in the northern hemisphere. These resultsinclude precise, homogeneous spectral types, basic physical parameters(including the effective temperature, surface gravity, and overallmetallicity [M/H]), and measures of the chromospheric activity of ourprogram stars. Observed and derived data presented in this paper arealso available on the project's Web site.

Improved Astrometry and Photometry for the Luyten Catalog. II. Faint Stars and the Revised Catalog We complete construction of a catalog containing improved astrometry andnew optical/infrared photometry for the vast majority of NLTT starslying in the overlap of regions covered by POSS I and by the secondincremental Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) release, approximately 44%of the sky. The epoch 2000 positions are typically accurate to 130 mas,the proper motions to 5.5 mas yr-1, and the V-J colors to0.25 mag. Relative proper motions of binary components are measured to 3mas yr-1. The false-identification rate is ~1% for11<~V<~18 and substantially less at brighter magnitudes. Theseimprovements permit the construction of a reduced proper-motion diagramthat, for the first time, allows one to classify NLTT stars intomain-sequence (MS) stars, subdwarfs (SDs), and white dwarfs (WDs). We inturn use this diagram to analyze the properties of both our catalog andthe NLTT catalog on which it is based. In sharp contrast to popularbelief, we find that NLTT incompleteness in the plane is almostcompletely concentrated in MS stars, and that SDs and WDs are detectedalmost uniformly over the sky δ>-33deg. Our catalogwill therefore provide a powerful tool to probe these populationsstatistically, as well as to reliably identify individual SDs and WDs.

Statistics of spectroscopic sub-systems in visual multiple stars A large sample of visual multiples of spectral types F5-M has beensurveyed for the presence of spectroscopic sub-systems. Some 4200 radialvelocities of 574 components were measured in 1994-2000 with thecorrelation radial velocity meter. A total of 46 new spectroscopicorbits were computed for this sample. Physical relations are establishedfor most of the visual systems and several optical components areidentified as well. The period distribution of sub-systems has a maximumat periods from 2 to 7 days, likely explained by a combination of tidaldissipation with triple-star dynamics. The fraction of spectroscopicsub-systems among the dwarf components of close visual binaries withknown orbits is similar to that of field dwarfs, from 11% to 18% percomponent. Sub-systems are more frequent among the components of widevisual binaries and among wide tertiary components to the known visualor spectroscopic binaries - 20% and 30%, respectively. In triple systemswith both outer (visual) and inner (spectroscopic) orbits known, we findan anti-correlation between the periods of inner sub-systems and theeccentricities of outer orbits which must be related to dynamicalstability constraints. Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

A preliminary compilation of DS-programme star positions A catalog is presented of the double-star-program (DS-program) starpositions, listing right ascensions for 930 DSs and declinations for1225 DSs of the program. The positions were compiled from the observedvalues obtained between 1980 and 1987 with the meridian circles of sixUSSR observatories (the Moscow, Kazan', Kiev, Khar'kov, Odessa, andTashkent Observatories) and the Belgrade Observatory. The measurementsand the treatment of the observational material were performed using therelative method, and the FK-4 system stars were used as reference stars.

A complete sample of wide binaries in the solar neighborhood A well-defined sample of unambiguously bound wide binaries in the solarneighborhood is presented. The sample appears complete for physicalsystems where s is greater than 0.32 mpc, M(V) is less than 9.0, pi is0.040 arcsec or greater, and delta is larger than -12 deg. The samplecontains 39 systems, of which about 41 percent are hierarchical systems. The distribution of the separations from the sample obeys a simple powerlaw relation. A sharp cutoff in number density is indicated at about 0.1pc. Based on the sample, number densities for wide binaries arecalculated as a function of separation. It appears that about 3 percentof local stars should be members of systems wider than 0.01 pc.

Micrometer observations of double stars from the Fabra Observatory The 38-cm refractor at the Fabra Observatory in Spain was used to obtain150 micrometer observations of 61 double stars. In tabular form, eachstar is listed by its WDS number, the letters of its components (ifmultiple), its ADS number, the observation epoch, the observed positionsangle, and the angular distance between the components. For the multipleobservations, in no case did the averaged measurements differ by morethan 3 deg for positions or 0.10 arcsec for angular separations.

Search for systematic effects in photographic measurements of visual binaries Photographic plates (265) of selected visual double stars obtained bymeans of the 105 cm astrometric reflector of the AstronomicalObservatory of Torino have been taken during 1984. 118 visual doublestars of this series of observations (the 7th) have been measured twiceby two persons using two different measuring machines. In this paper thesingle measures of the polar coordinates for each person and the averagevalues obtained combining the two types of measures are reported. Ananalysis of the systematic errors due to the two systems of measurementand considerations about the type of motion of each binary are given.

Photoelectric UBV-photometry of triple-star components Photoelectric UBV photometry was performed on components of 30 brightand nearby triple stars to identify physically linked triple systems andto determine their distances and dynamic evolution. An analysis of 60catalogs showed only 10 triple systems. For every component, E(B-V) andE(U-B) color excesses are determined and photometric parallaxes arecalculated using available spectral types.

Three-dimensional motion of dwarf stars and RR Lyrae variables A collection of 220 high-velocity dwarfs, 532 low-velocity dwarfs, and114 RR Lyrae variables is given in tables with calculations ofkinematical quantities in a three-dimensional model of galactic space. Ametal indicator, Delta-S, for RR Lyrae variables is transformed into theultraviolet excess, delta (0.6), which is utilized for a statisticalstudy of kinematics under the same metallicity classification. It isfound that the primordial Galaxy contracted by a factor of at least 20in the radial direction as compared to at least 50 in the Z direction.
