Merged catalogue of reflection nebulae
Several catalogues of reflection nebulae are merged to create a uniformcatalogue of 913 objects. It contains revised coordinates,cross-identifications of nebulae and stars, as well as identificationswith IRAS point sources. The catalogue is only available in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/399/141

The Scorpius OB2 Complex
The Sco OB2 complex is a member of the Local Association. Theassociation contains pre-main-sequence stars in addition to objects some3 x 10^7 yr old. If it is assumed that stars in wide binaries arecoeval, then the He-weak variables in the supercluster arepre-main-sequence, elevated above that sequence by an amount similar tothat of the 3 x 10^7 yr old, normal stars but contracting toward thesequence, not evolving from it. The apparent great depth of theassociation is probably a result of some foreground superclustermembers, superposed on Sco OB2, and a rift in the absorption cloudbetween Scorpius and Ophiuchus. The adjoining Chamaeleon complex alsoappears to be a member of the supercluster.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

A homogeneous catalog of new UBV and H-beta photometry of B- and A-type stars in and around the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association
B- and A-type stars in and near the Sco-Cen OB association areinvestigated with UBV and H-beta photometry to acquire data relevant tothe luminosity function of Sco-Cen. The measurements generally consistof two 10-s integrations of U, B, V, (W, N) filters, and theobservations are corrected iteratively for atmospheric extinction andinstrumental response. The data presented give the mean V magnitude, mean B-V, mean U-B, and the estimated uncertainties for these values. The catalog provides a homogeneous catalog of data for a large fieldwith stellar objects delineating membership to the association Sco-Cenand that affect the luminosity function of the aggregate.

Behind the vdB102 reflection nebula - A study of a compact molecular cloud's envelope at G355.5 + 20.9
Line observations of the methylidyne (CH) molecule were performed atAlgonquin, toward the reflection nebula vdB102. An analysis of themolecular cloud behind vdB102 yielded several envelope parameters, notably a CH column density of 1 x 10 to the 13th/sq cm, amicroturbulent velocity of 1.4 km/s, and a total space density of1300/cu cm. These observed data are consistent with a stationaryreflection nebula roughly facing the earth, located on the near side ofthe surface of a compact molecular cloud.

ICCD speckle observations of binary stars. II - Measurements during 1982-1985 from the Kitt Peak 4 M telescope
This paper represents the continuation of a systematic program of binarystar speckle interferometry initiated at the 4 m telescope on Kitt Peakin late 1975. Between 1975 and 1981, the observations were obtained witha photographic speckle camera, the data from which were reduced byoptical analog methods. In mid-1982, a new speckle camera employing anintensified charge-coupled device as the detector continued the programand necessitated the development of new digital procedures for reducingand analyzing speckle data. The camera and the data-processingtechniques are described herein. This paper presents 2780 newmeasurements of 1012 binary and multiple star systems, including thefirst direct resolution of 64 systems, for the interval 1982 through1985.

Photoelectric observations of lunar occultations. XV
The last (or possibly penultimate) paper in a series on lunaroccultations presents observations of 404 phenomena, preceded by somegeneral remarks of a retrospective nature. The series of observationsbegan in 1968. Data for 20 doubles or suspected doubles are presented, ranked in order of certainty, with designation 3 representing thesurest. Thirteen of the cases refer to stars not previously noted asdoubles. Seven determinations of angular diameters are presented, ofwhich three have been previously observed.

Photographic observations of visual double stars
Photographic observations of 238 pairs of visual binaries obtained on770 plates using the 60-cm visual refractor of Bosscha Observatory(Lembang, Java) during 1976-1979 are reported, continuing the catalog ofvan Albada-van Dien (1983). The data-reduction procedures are brieflydescribed, and the data are presented in a table.

Photographic observations of visual double stars
The results of photographic observations of 199 visual double stars, obtained at the Bosscha Observatory at Lembang, Indonesia, in the years1958-1975 (with one 1953 plate) are presented. The material comprises708 plates with an average of 37 images measured per plate. A shortdescription of the program is given (cf. van Albada-van Dien, 1958).

Polarization of stars in R-associations - Observational data
Polarimetric data are assembled for 95 stars that are illuminatingreflection nebulae. Most of these belong to 18 standard R-associations.The observed dependence of the percentage polarization P on wavelengthand color excess E(B-V) suggest that the unpolarized light ofR-association members may become polarized as it traverses an ensembleof dust grains aligned by a magnetic field which in some cases (Tau R2,Ori R1/R2, Sco R1, Cep R2) is intrinsic to the association. In certainR-associations the grain size is variable and the stochastic magneticfield component fluctuates on a scale of 10-30 pc.

A survey of interstellar neutral potassium. I - Abundances and physical conditions in clouds toward 188 early-type stars
Observations of interstellar absorption in the resonance doublet 7664,7698 A of neutral potassium toward 188 early-type stars at a spectralresolution of 8 km/s are reported. The 7664 A line is successfullyseparated from nearly coincident telluric O2 absorption for all but afew of the 165 stars for which K I absorption is detected, makingpossible an abundance analysis by the doublet ratio method. Therelationships between the potassium abundances and other atomicabundances, the abundance of molecular hydrogen, and interstellarreddening are investigated.

Molecular clouds associated with reflection nebulae. I - A survey of carbon monoxide emission
The paper presents 2.6 mm wavelength CO and (C-13)O observations of 130molecular clouds associated with reflection nebulae. Enhanced COemission was found in the vicinity of the illuminating star in abouthalf the objects studied. There is a tendency for the CO peak to beslightly displaced from the star. Many examples of peaks that appear toresult from heating of the cloud by the nearby star are found, whileothers appear to be associated with independent concentrations ofmaterial.

Estimation of spectral classifications for bright southern stars with interesting Stromgren indices
This paper investigates the degree of success with which uvby photometrycan be applied to predict spectral classifications for 947 A, F, and Gstars brighter than an apparent magnitude of 8.3 and with four-colorindices indicating some kind of interesting, unusual, or peculiarspectrum. One or several possible spectral classifications are estimatedfor each star from photometry alone, double stars are distinguished, andthe estimates are compared with published classifications. The resultsshow that the framework provided by uvby photometry can be extended toinclude most G and K stars, reddened stars, peculiar stars, and certaintypes of double star.

Spectral types of stars with unusual photometric indices
The Kitt Peak 2.1-m Cassegrain spectrograph was used to obtain spectraof 92 A5-G0 stars measured by Olsen in the Stromgren four-color systemand predicted to be abnormal in the sense of excessive reddening, highluminosity, or abnormal composition. Of the five stars predicted to bereddened B or A stars, four were indeed such while for the fifth Olsenobserved the blended components. Of twelve stars predicted to besupergiants, one is a supergiant, four are giants, two are subgiants, three are Ap stars, and two are Am stars. Thus photometrically predictedsupergiants are actually stars above main sequence in two out of threecases but mostly much less luminous than expected. Of ten predictedweak-lined stars, only two were found to be really so. Am stars werewell predicted, though detection is contaminated with Ap and luminousstars. It is concluded that four-color photometry is useful in selectinginteresting stars, but is often unable to tell the specific type ofabnormality present.

The differential blanketing of the main-sequence and near-main-sequence M67 stars relative to the Hyades and Coma
The blanketing of main-sequence stars in the Hyades, Coma, and M67, andof F subgiants in M67 is compared on the basis of red photometry. Therequired reddening corrections are derived by several techniques thatare insensitive or probably insensitive to blanketing. The meanreddening values obtained are E(B-V) of approximately 0.016 for theHyades, 0.006 for Coma, and 0.053 for M67. These reddening values areshown to imply that there is measurable reddening well inside 100 pc,that Crawford's (1975) A- and F-star relations must be slightly revised, that significant numbers of relatively nearby field A stars are slightlyreddened, that the North Galactic Pole stars of Hilditch et al. (1976)are reddened by 0.01 to 0.03 in B-V, and that Hyades-field F-star b-ycomparisons must be revised. It is found from the reddening-correctedphotometry that: (1) the differential Hyades-M67 blocking is greater inabsolute value for early G late F stars; (2) effects of evolution on theF IV stars in M67 are clearly discernible in the UV and marginally so inB-V; and (3) the F stars on and very near the M67 main sequence haveapproximately the Coma blocking and considerably less than the Hyadesblocking, which indicates that the zero-age metallicity of M67 issolar-normal.
