Total to Selective Extinction Ratios and Visual Extinctions from Ultraviolet Data
We present determinations of the total to selective extinction ratio R_Vand visual extinction A_V values for Milky Way stars using ultravioletcolor excesses. We extend the analysis of Gnacinski and Sikorski (1999)by using non-equal weights derived from observational errors. We presenta detailed discussion of various statistical errors. In addition, weestimate the level of systematic errors by considering differentnormalization of the extinction curve adopted by Wegner (2002). Ourcatalog of 782 R_V and A_V values and their errors is available in theelectronic form on the World Wide Web.

The total-to-selective extinction ratio determined from near IR photometry of OB stars
The paper presents an extensive list of the total to selectiveextinction ratios R calculated from the infrared magnitudes of 597 O andB stars using the extrapolation method. The IR magnitudes of these starswere taken from the literature. The IR colour excesses are determinedwith the aid of "artificial standards" - Wegner (1994). The individualand mean values of total to selective extinction ratios R differ in mostcases from the average value R=3.10 +/-0.05 - Wegner (1993) in differentOB associations. The relation between total to selective extinctionratios R determined in this paper and those calculated using the "methodof variable extinction" and the Cardelli et al. (1989) formulae isdiscussed. The R values presented in this paper can be used to determineindividual absolute magnitudes of reddened OB stars with knowntrigonometric parallaxes.

UBV beta Database for Case-Hamburg Northern and Southern Luminous Stars
A database of photoelectric UBV beta photometry for stars listed in theCase-Hamburg northern and southern Milky Way luminous stars surveys hasbeen compiled from the original research literature. Consisting of over16,000 observations of some 7300 stars from over 500 sources, thisdatabase constitutes the most complete compilation of such photometryavailable for intrinsically luminous stars around the Galactic plane.Over 5000 stars listed in the Case-Hamburg surveys still lackfundamental photometric data.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Extinction law survey based on UV ANS photometry
The paper presents an extensive survey of interstellar extinction curvesderived from the ANS photometric measurements of early type starsbelonging to our Galaxy. This survey is more extensive and deeper thanany other one, based on spectral data. The UV color excesses aredetermined with the aid of 'artificial standards', a new techniqueproposed by the authors which allows the special check of Sp/L match ofa target and the selected standard. The results indicate that extinctionlaw changes from place to place.

Empirical temperature calibrations for early-type stars
Three temperature calibrations of suitable photometric quantities havebeen derived for O and B stars. A sample of 120 stars with reliableT(eff.) determinations has been used for establishing each calibration.The different calibrations have been critically discussed and compared.Temperature determinations for 1009 program stars have been obtainedwith an accuracy of the order of 10 percent.

Atlas of the wavelength dependence of ultraviolet extinction in the Galaxy
The paper presents a collection of 115 extinction curves derived fromlow-dispersion IUE spectra. The spectra have been reduced with the useof techniques designed to reduce the effects of random noise and theinfluence of residual spectral features due to classification mismatch.The magnitudes of other instrumental and interpretational uncertaintiesare estimated. The extinction curves are presented with normalization toE(B-V) = 1 and the FUV portion (below 170 nm) is also shown for E(13-17)= 1. The atlas includes examples of extinction originating in thediffuse medium and several major nebulae and dense clouds.

The interstellar 217 NM band - A third catalogue of equivalent widths
A catalog of equivalent widths of the 217 nm interstellar absorptionband as well as other parameters characterizing the extinction curve inthe ultraviolet has been compiled for 790 O and B stars. A relativelytight correlation between the equivalent width of the 217 nm band andE(B-V) indicates that the absorber of this band is connected with thepopulation of larger interstellar grains responsible for the visualextinction. The parameter characterizing the amount of extinction in thefar UV is only weakly correlated with E(B-V), a result in accord withthe assumption that a second population of very small grains causes therapid increase of the far-UV extinction.

The variation of interstellar extinction in the ultraviolet
One hundred and fifty-four reddened stars that are apparently normal inthe visible were selected from the S2/68 Ultraviolet Sky Survey. Theultraviolet data for 92 of these cannot be explained in terms of a fixedinterstellar extinction law. Between 1400 and 2740 A, the extinctioncurve for each star can be well represented by two parts; astraight-line scattering component and a Lorentzian 2200 A absorptionfeature. Independent variations are found in both parts and these cannotbe explained by photometric or spectral classification errors. Bothparts vary smoothly, implying that there is no fixed extinction law, andone star in three is found to depart from the mean law by more than 1mag at either 1500 or 2200 A. The two variations allow not only all 154stars to be explained but also anomalous stars reported by otherauthors. These are not special but merely situated towards the limits ofthe variations. A variation in the relative proportions of graphite andsilicate grains goes some way towards explaining the observations. Theprofile of the 2200 A feature is determined, the symmetrical shape isconfirmed, and the profile fits a Lorentzian very closely.

Observations of interstellar diffuse absorption band at 4430 A
Observations of the interstellar diffuse absorption band at 4430 A for800 O and B stars in Neckel's (1967) catalog are being carried out, and482 spectra obtained up to September 1983 have been reduced. It isconfirmed that the strength of the interstellar diffuse absorption bandat 4430 A does not simply relate to the abundance of interstellar grainson the line of sight. The relation between the color excess E(B-V) andthe equivalent width of the band to the direction of l = 130-140 deg andb = -5 to +5 deg shows that some parameter(s) other than E(B-V) is (are)needed to understand the cause of this band.

Catalog of O-B stars observed with Tokyo Meridian Circle
A catalog of the O-B stars, selected from 'Blaauw-Parenago' list andRubin's catalog, has been compiled on the FK4 system by the observationsmade with Gautier 8-inch Meridian Circle at the Tokyo AstronomicalObservatory during the period, 1971 to 1979. It contains 1059 stars andwas compiled for the future establishment of high precision propermotions of O-B stars.

A catalog of ultraviolet interstellar extinction excesses for 1415 stars
Ultraviolet interstellar extinction excesses are presented for 1415stars with spectral types B7 and earlier. The excesses with respect to Vare derived from Astronomical Netherlands Satellite (ANS) 5-channel UVphotometry at central wavelengths of approximately 1550, 1800, 2500, and3300 A. A measure of the excess extinction in the 2200-A extinction bumpis also given. The data are valuable for investigating the systematicsof peculiar interstellar extinction and for studying the character of UVinterstellar extinction in the general direction of stars for which theextinction-curve shape is unknown.

Interstellar reddening law towards the nucleus of H Per
The extinction curves in the direction of four early-B main-sequencestars located in the nucleus of h Per (BD + 56 deg 501, BD + 56 deg 510,BD + 56 deg 516 and BD + 56 deg 517) and compared to one another and tothe extinction curves derived from eight stars located in the samegeneral area but lying at different distances. Data from UBV photometryand low-dispersion UV (IUE) spectroscopy were used to derive the curves.The interstellar reddening law along the line of sight of the four h Perstars is constant. The extinction curves match the curves derived fromstars located in the region of the Perseus arm surrounding the cluster.This result suggests that the interstellar medium in the h Per directionhas properties similar to those of the general h and Chi Per direction.There is a rather smooth decrease in the extinction per unit distancewith increasing height from the galactic plane, which is consistent withthe lower density of the interstellar medium away from the galacticplane. There is no indication of a variation of the ratio bump strengthto far-UV extinction with distance.

The local system of early type stars - Spatial extent and kinematics
Published uvby and H-beta photometric data and proper motions arecompiled and analyzed to characterize the structure and kinematics ofthe bright early-type O-A0 stars in the solar vicinity, with a focus onthe Gould belt. The selection and calibration techniques are explained,and the data are presented in extensive tables and graphs and discussedin detail. The Gould belt stars of age less than 20 Myr are shown togive belt inclination 19 deg to the Galactic plane and node-lineorientation in the direction of Galactic rotation, while the symmetricaldistribution about the Galactic plane and kinematic properties (purecircular differential rotation) of the belt stars over 60 Myr oldresemble those of fainter nonbelt stars of all ages. The unresolveddiscrepancy between the expansion observed in the youngest nearby starsand the predictions of simple models of expansion from a point isattributed to the inhomogeneous distribution of interstellar matter.

Catalog of BV magnitudes and spectral classes of 6000 stars
The present catalog, compiled at the Abastumani Observatory, contains BVmagnitudes and spectral classes of about 6000 stars up to V(lim) = 13.0min five circular areas of 18 sq deg located near the salactic-equatorplane. The catalog is intended for star-statistics studies ofstar-formation regions.

Radial velocities for early type stars in six galactic regions
Coudespectroscopy has been carried out for 353 stars of spectral typesB0-A0 and V magnitudes between 6.5 and 10.8 m, selected in six regions(three northern and three southern) close to the galactic plane at thegalactic longitudes 135, 175, 315 and 350 deg. The radial velocitieswere obtained by cross-correlating each spectrogram with a referencespectrogram giving an internal error of 1.4 km/s.

Interstellar extinction in the Perseus arm
Individual UV extinction curves for nine stars located in the directionof h and Chi Persei in the distance range 0.6-4.4 kpc are presented. Theobservations were made with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE)in the low dispersion mode with large aperture. The sample has beenenlarged by the use of available UV and visible data for 32 reddenedstars with distances r not less than 2 kpc located in the samedirection. It is found that the mean interstellar extinction curve forthe stars located in the Perseus arm shows significantly higherextinction shortward of 2000 A than the galactic mean.

The influence of interstellar absorption on measured strengths of the Balmer discontinuity
The definition of the Balmer-discontinuity strength from observationalspectrophotometric data is discussed in relation to detailed results onthe wavenumber dependence of the interstellar absorption. The break inthe interstellar absorption curve at a wavenumber of about 2.33permicrons is found to introduce systematic errors in many currentlydefined strengths of the Balmer discontinuity. The errors should beproportional to the amount of the color excess caused by interstellarabsorption. Using the interstellar absorption curves established byDivan (1954) and by Nandy (1964) theoretical relations are derivedbetween the amount of interstellar absorption and the correspondinginfluence on the Balmer-discontinuity strength. These linear relationsare confirmed through tests on larger sets of observational data. At thesame time the derived relations are useful as correction formulas.

A spectrophotometric survey of stars along the Milky Way. IV
In the present paper a catalogue of spectrophotometric quantities,spectral types, monochromatic magnitudes and colour equivalents is givenfor all stars brighter than the magnitude m4400 = 10.5 in aregion of the Milky Way in Perseus. No absorption is found for starscloser than about r = 100 pc. The absorbing clouds are situated atdistances closer than 1 kpc and at about 2.5 kpc in the local arm andthe Perseus arm, respectively. The space between the two arms is freefrom absorption. It is also concluded that the Perseus arm continuesbeyond l = 140 deg, containing not only hydrogen gas but also dust to atleast l = 150 deg), while the content of OB stars decreases abruptly atl = 140 deg.
